The Things I've Learned

You walked into my life before asking me,
Without asking me.
A darn good thing because if you had,
I'd probably have refused you.

You came in so gently --
So unassuming and kind --
It was impossible not to fall in love,
I was drawn to you.
(We all are)

So child-like you were--
So full of needs,
So dependent,
So full of life.

And I -- stupid
An ass, to bluntly state it,
Was frightened
And at least a little hateful,
I tried to remove you from my life..

How stupid!
You walked in with force --
You would not be forced to leave --
And,
My life was placed and purposed proximate to yours.

I was heartless but I still had eyes --
I could see how much this hurt you,
Indeed, my actions shoved you to the ground
And lacerated your back.

You're gone now,
I'll never see your face on earth again.
And it's only now I've will to think
About how you really were
Only now I begin to understand,

Only now,
I'm granted insight, and I see
The way in which you cared for me
And what that really meant.
You're gone, but now I clearly see your love.

And beg you for forgiveness,
For your mercy because I despised that love,
And find I'm fully forgiven
And bask in the new life I'm granted.
